Sydenham

Overview

Sydenham lies mainly within the Borough of Lewisham although some streets are in the Borough of Bromley and Southwark. The area was one of the first in southern England to have a railway station. Wells Park is the site of the famous springs which attracted many visitors to the area in the 17th century. In 2012 Sydenham won a bid for the national Portas Pilot competition which provided a grant to improve the high street. Every summer the Sydenham Arts Festival is held where there are workshops, music and family activities.

"I thought we had moved to the middle of nowhere - how wrong I was. It's perfect for everything we could ever want."

Going Out

Trattoria Rafaelle – which has a special place in the hearts of locals – is an Italian restaurant where the atmosphere is relaxed, the menu varied and the produce fresh. It has a good daily ‘specials’ board. The Gurkha’s, although unprepossessing from the outside, offers Nepalese specialties. We’re told the Salmon Saufiami is a star dish. You can pick up a locally-brewed beer in the newly-opened Beer Rebellion.

Shopping

In 2013 the high street was part of the Portas Pilot re-generation scheme. It looks like the momentum has been kept up judging by the continued launch of new shops. Need a cake for a special occasion The Cake Store will be able to satisfy most requests (within reason!)  – and it’ll be delicious to boot. Kirkdale bookshop is an award-winning bookshop and cultural hub. You can also pick up a coffee inside.

Parks

Sydenham Wells Park is one of the most attractive parks in the borough with   water features, formal gardens and a glorious array of trees, shrubs and flowers. There are two tennis courts and a multi sports ball court as well. The park recently won bronze in the Britain in Bloom national finals and is a Green Flag Award winner.
