New Year Brings Renewed Consumer Confidence

Nationwide Consumer Confidence Index January 2010: Key Findings
•Nationwide's Consumer Confidence Index recorded a three point increase in January, from 70 in December to 73, almost double the level of a year ago when it stood at just 39 points.
•Consumers were more positive about the current economic and employment situation as well as the situation in six months, with both the Present Situation and the Expectations indices recording rises.
•In contrast, the Spending Index suffered a sharp fall from 108 in December to 96.
•However, consumers' house price expectations improved in January, with respondents anticipating the value of their property to be 1.1 per cent higher in six months' time, compared to 1.0 per cent last month.
